Confirm you no longer need SR22.
First, you must be absolutely sure that your SR22 requirement period has ended. Too many times, I've had clients call to cancel the Non-Owner SR22 Policy, thinking the three years were up, only to call back two weeks later, stating they received a letter from the Oregon DMV that they will be suspended within 30 days if they don't turn in a new SR22. After calling the DMV at 503-299-9999, they discovered that the PRU date had not yet been reached.
Cancel the Non-Owner Policy
Once you are convinced that the SR22 requirement has been satisfied, then you can cancel your Non-Owner Policy. There is no sense in continuing to pay for a secondary policy to keep your license valid. The same rule applies afterward: Whichever car you drive must have insurance on it by its owner.
What if I have an Owner-Operator policy?
If the Non-Owner Policy does not apply to you because you insure a car, then we will remove the SR22 filing from your policy. The auto insurance company will stop sending the certificate to the DMV. They will send an SR26 notice to the DMV informing them that the SR22 has been removed from your policy. A representative at the DMV will verify in their system that your PRU date has been reached and will log the notice of completion in your file.
You do not need to cancel your auto insurance policy, as the company will automatically adjust any costs associated with the SR22's removal.
Can I shop around for better insurance?
Yes! We placed you with a specific insurer because they were the best fit for you when you had your SR22, but once that time is over, that company might not be the most affordable option. We'll be pleased to shop around again, as completing an SR22 period is a significant milestone in your driving journey. Sometimes we are successful in finding a much better quote for you than what you had before. We can advise you on the best time to switch.
What happens next?
Now that you have reached this point of completing the SR22, it is a good time to recommit to driving safely. Always have insurance, and if you borrow a car, ensure it has insurance before you operate it. Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If too many tickets have led to your suspension, we'll work with you to reduce your rate as each one is removed.
